Progenitor of a Genre

I'm glad I took the opportunity to read the Kindle version of this genre-creating novel. THE classic western novel captures the essential conflicts inherent in the human condition: good vs. evil; love vs. hate; morality vs. necessity; and desire vs. duty. All of the subsequent western stories -- perhaps the most popular form of literature and entertainment in the world -- build on the themes originally explored in this one.
This tale, set in the Wyoming Territory of the 1880s, was written about 20 to 25 years later. The style, although a bit more florid than one encounters today, is almost poetic in its rhythms, yet it remains crisp and clear throughout. Although the book is a bit lengthy, none of it is wasted. In fact, the author colors in only those details that aid the reader's understanding. Like a fine movie, this novel consists of a series of excellent scenes, each of which moves the story forward.
The characters, whose words and actions propel the story, are vivid, and the reader inevitably roots for the success of the eponymous protagonist although never learning his actual name.

It took a little while to get used to Mister Wister's (ha!) writing style, something about his almost loving descriptions about the Virginian (as a matter of fact at one point he did say he loved him) put me off, but once past that the story had me, making it tough to put down. Possibly because I had recently traveled through the areas in Wyoming and Idaho where most of the story takes place I was seriously smitten, but Wister has a masterful way of weaving numerous subplots into a cohesive, dramatic, whole which I found irresistible. Interestingly, in Medicine Bow there are now numerous businesses named after The Virginian (The Virginian Hotel and so on) as well as a museum and placard commemorating The Virginian and Owen Wister; however, Wister's description of Medicine Bow in the book is anything but complimentary! I guess it did put them on the map though. My advice: read it!

Old Favorite

This is one of my all time favorite books. I first was introduced to it when a child and my mother used to read to me. Since that time so long ago, I have re-read The Virginian a dozen times. I love it every time, although some parts are favorites. I never could watch the TV show because it just did not fit this wonderful story of a cowboy in the 1800's. I'm sorry that today's youth are usually not interested in cowboys because they brought hours and hours of entertainment to those of us who grew up in the 50's and 60's; it's a way of life that is truly gone forever. Anyone who will read this in spite of the old fashioned style will truly be entertained.
