I immediately felt that I could have written this book in the way it is written by the author. The book draws very important points bringing up the differences between the modern diet, the Neolithic diet and the Paleolithic diet and related benefits and evolving health issues. The author clearly distinguishes the original Paleolithic diet from its modern version; something that is done by very few authors on the subject. Something to try out if you are one of the growing number of people who suffer from chronic conditions and/or lack energy - the book explains why this is the case and how the Paleo diet can help...

This book has been thoroughly researched and contains chapters on Climate of Ohio, snow & ice storms, cold, heat, drought, floods, damaging winds & tornadoes, and hail & other outstanding weather events. There's also an appendix of Average Temperature & Precipitation, and one of Ohio's Records & Extremes. Within its hard covers are many charts and a nice sprinkling of compelling historical weather photos. Had I known about this book earlier, I'd have gotten a copy for my late parents, who would both have enjoyed it as much as I am! Much educational material and concisely/clearly delivered.

Good way to pass a lazy afternoon

This is another great set for Nora's fans who don't want to delve too deeply into character development or plot twists. I could see most of them coming a mile away but I think that's due to the fact I've read so many of her books.
Are you looking for a light read to pass a lazy afternoon? Then look no further; here it is!
However, I do prefer some of her other sets to this. I like a tad more suspense and don't want to figure out it all ends happily ever after by the 2nd chapter.

A masterful shipwreck story

The shipwreck chronicle, like the murder story or bank heist, is the kind of narrative journalists love. Give a faithful account of what happened, don't oversell it, and you're almost guaranteed a riveting tale. That doesn't mean that these stories are without their perils, and what makes Matthew Shaer's "The Sinking of the Bounty" so remarkable is the way evades all of them.

Shaer's e-book is a deeply reported retelling of the Bounty's ill-advised voyage into the heart of Hurricane Sandy interspersed with discussions of the boat's history (it was built for the Marlon Brando version of "Mutiny on the Bounty"), the backstories of its central characters (especially compelling are captain Robin Wallbridge and crewmember Doug Faunt), and the storm that will destroy it. What Shaer does best of all—the writing is impeccable throughout—is balance these elements. He tells us all we need to know about Sandy without wringing extra tension and length out of personifying the storm. (Sandy's winds never get "angrier" or more "intent on" anything.) The nuggets on the boat's history are similarly concise and well-drawn. This economy of explication lets Shaer focus on the voyage and the eccentric world of tall-ship sailing in which it existed. The countdown to the sinking is heart-pounding stuff, and the boat's band of misfits jump with life, even though the short e-book form allows Shaer to spend only a brief time with each. This is at its heart a deeply absurd story—a Hollywood recreation of a ship throws itself into a devastating storm with an Ahab-like captain at the helm—and Shaer, by playing it straight and true, has total command of it.

Wonderful

I don't usually write reviews on Amazon, but Mr. Shaer's "The Sinking of the Bounty" doesn't fall into the "usual e-book" category. It's fluid and captivating, and offers a perspective on Hurricane Sandy that many news outlets (or, at least the ones I'm privy to) neglected to portray. The writing is quick and Shaer's storytelling has a distinct pulse, which intensifies the feeling of working as a deckhand and serves as a life raft in times of uncertainty.

Sailors often speak of how much they respect the sea, and will usually continue singing its praises even after tragedy strikes. It's a lifestyle that comes with tremendous risk and sacrifice, but also with great historical significance and honor. Shaer deftly reflects this tradeoff (which many loved ones still fail to understand) by seamlessly combining the mechanics of the Bounty's demise and the spirits of the crew. It is a true story, and worth far more than its price.

Another good piece from the ever-impressive Atavist. This long-form article by Matthew Shaer, complete with video and photographs, examines the sinking of the 'Bounty' during Hurricane Sandy. The approach is pretty familiar. We're dropped into the water during the rescue, then pulled back to trace the ship's passage into the eye of the storm. There's also the Junger-esque sideline about hurricane strengths and another small aside on Blight's original vessel. Still, the familiar construction is tightly written, exciting to read and designed to hide the identity of the two crew members who never make it back until the last chapter. The pair who don't survive add a pathos to the article that lets the big questions linger. Should the captain ever have left harbor? Should inexperienced hands ever be put in such terrifying positions?
Certainly worth the buck or two and at least on a par with what the world of print magazines is producing.

Okay but for certian types of teachers

If you are a new teacher there is lot you face that you don't know about. As a new teacher I bought this book to get some questions answered and get basic advice. However as an elective teacher in middle school a book has yet to be written that answers the questions that face this select group of teachers. If you are teaching a content area and you are a new middle school teacher then this book might help. But save your money until after you finish your Inservice and New Teacher Training because many of your questions will already be answered.

This is a great book. I am currently entering my 2nd year of teaching 5th grade. There are so many things that I wish I had known last year that this book brings out. Even though 5th isn't quite middle school, these strategies are still very useful.

He was a trailblazing 20th-century British photojournalist but George Rodger lived in the adventurous tradition of 19th-century explorers. Cofounding Magnum Photos, in 1947, with Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, the modest Rodger was eclipsed by his partners - until now. Rodger's Indiana Jones-style escapades are legendary and worth the telling. He once covered over 75,000 miles of "old Africa" in a Land Rover. He even survived a white rhino charge. He went on to become a key photographer of African tribal life. During World War II he covered 61 countries for Life magazine. He was chased through 300 miles of Burmese jungles by both the Japanese army and a tribe of headhunters. And he was the first to record the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He quit photography when he realized he was arranging "thousands of Jewish corpses in nice photographic compositions".

In fascinating detail Carol Naggar not only recalls Roger's singular life and artistic contribution, but she also provides an in-depth look at the complex dynamics of ethics, violence, and photojournalism. As such, it places the legacy of George Rodger within a broader sociohistorical context.

Good for reference, I suppose...

I am not a beginner, and I know this is a beginner's book, but... yeah, it shows you 50 different styles of eyes, all drawn from straight-ahead view. All with the EXACT same steps, which is sort of cool, but it's pretty repetitive. (I'm sure the text is just a copy-and-paste job.)

What would have been nice (and probably worth more than a buck) would have been to see how to translate these eye shapes to profile view, and 3/4 view.

I'm sure I can figure it all out, and this is a nice source of ideas, I've spent a dollar on worse things.

I got this book because I simply can't seem to get eyes right. I can now! This is a very easy book to use and I love it in digital form because I can carry it around with me all the time. And the price!!??!! It's worth ten times that price. I'll be checking out his other books now!

Disturbing

Why "disturbing"? Maybe because things haven't changed much for the better since this book was published. My edition says, 1968. "We need good schools and houses for people to live in and it could be done and we're going to make this country do it." Maybe things have changed for the worse.

This book was required reading for some class I took in High School back in the early 70's. I remembered reading it the other day, and remembered that when I turned 18 I went over to the Post Office in Casper, Wyoming and requested I be registered for the draft. 18 was The Age in Wyoming. Of course I wasn't allowed to register because women were neither required nor allowed to register for the draft. It was an individual action, ineffective, to be counted as someone who thought young men my age shouldn't be forced to fight in a war before they were even legally allowed to buy themselves a beer. If the Vietnam War was so right, why was it wrong for women to go fight? Some such 18 year old impulse acted upon.

Rereading this book was a necessity. It is so well written, so candid. I remembered how my father would say, "Is that a boy or a girl?" when we passed a guy with long hair. "If you can't tell, I don't know how to explain it to you dad." I remembered the SDS news stories, the war protests, radicalization of students, wondering what it was all about. I was 12 when The Strawberry Statement came out. I remember the "Love it or Leave it" bumper stickers and the open hostility directed at anyone who even remotely questioned the status quo. This book helped me put my memories into perspective. I love Kunen's deft handling of what could have been written up as total propaganda. There is sensitivity, realism, personal exposure, balance. I am in awe of the fact that he was 19 when he wrote about his experiences during the Columbia University rallies to protest the institution's hidden involvement in the war. This is only one of the reasons behind the rallies. I learned so many details about the SDS, the students who were protesting, the students who were against the protests, the sanctioned use of violence by the police against anyone they could grab hold of, tv interviews, skewed reporting, on and on. Very enlightening. Funny, sad, informative. I can't believe I am the first person to write a review of this exceptional piece of writing.

Strawberry Statement

If you've just seen the movie of this book or listened to its soundtrack or both, then, boy, you are missing out. This is an autobiographical tale of a college student who is conflicted about whether America's government is doing the right thing or not by going to war against Vietnam as well as making a segregated gym in the middle of a park in an African American neighborhood. So, naturally, he protests against both alongside many of his peers. Now, there's no love story here, no conflict given greater importance than the other, none of the simplicities the movie gave. Nothing is black and white and the college student, at one point, goes on a show to tell his side of the story that the government is creating of the protestors being bad and the government good for getting involved in war and screwing the country over only to discover the show's host is a Bill O'Reilly masquerading as an impartial newsman and the cameraman is encouraging the audience to be disrespectful and rude to those he and the early O'Reilly disagree by booing, jeering and just cutting him off for their old childish reasons. And that's just one of the many conflicts this college student faces in this 140-something pages of black and grey morality that lifts this story out of the simplistic trappings that the movie version indulged in. To all who've seen the movie and/or heard the soundtrack, this'll be worth reading and would be wrong for you to waste another minute not going off to get it.

Abrupt ending.........

It's a short story but you still get to know and like the characters. That is why I'm rather annoyed at the abrupt ending. I wanted more of THIS story not the almost 20 percent used to preview ANOTHER book--SO ANNOYING!

Solid story

Of all the mm books I've read (somewhere in the 200 range) this one rates in at a solid 3.5 stars. The characters were likeable, I found their immediate chemistry believable, and there were few grammatical errors. It didn't light me on fire or anything, but I enjoyed this story, and in the future may check out some of the authors other stories.

As for the previous several reviewers who say "it ends abruptly, blah blah blah", then I would recommend actually reading a books page before you buy it. The page clearly states:

"Previously a part of Hot Summer Fun Anthology"

If a story is part of an anthology, that means it is a novella, not a novel. It's a short story, and I'm sorry but a book called "Hot Summer Fun" probably isn't gonna be filled with sweeping epic tales of deep and eternal love that delve into the characters childhood, psyches, or long term motivations, comes full circle to the happy ending and then follows the lovebirds until they are old and gray.

I was perfectly aware of what I was buying when I bought it, as I read the entire description, and didn't find the ending to be abrupt at all. I thought it set the page for a possible sequel, that might or might not happen, and if it doesn't, use your imagination.

A great short story - it would be nice to see this developed into a full novel and/or series of novels. The character definitions were great, they just need to go further!
