Inzwischen kann man auch aufgrund einer Vielzahl wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen davon ausgehen, dass das Ernährungsverhalten und die soziale Lage von Personen in enger Beziehung zueinander stehen. Doch wie lässt sich dieser Zusammenhang erklären? Pierre Bourdieus kulturwissenschaftliche Gesellschaftstheorie „Die feinen Unterschiede", in der die Geschmackswahl durch tief verwurzelte, erlernte Präferenzen erklärt wird, kann als „starting point for many debates" betrachtet werden. Sie bietet eine theoretische Grundlage, um die Ursachen für die Unterschiede im Ernährungsverhalten verständlich zu machen.
In der folgenden Arbeit soll geklärt werden, ob der Bourdieusche kulturtheoretische Ansatz insbesondere für das Ernährungsverhalten in unserer heutigen modernen Wohlstandgesellschaft noch relevant ist. Dabei wird anhand einzelner, auch von Bourdieu erwähnter wichtiger sozioökonomischer Variablen, nämlich Alter, Geschlecht und soziale Klasse, beleuchtet, inwiefern diese für die Ernährung von Bedeutung sind. Ein möglicher Zusammenhang wird anhand theoretischer Bezüge zu Bourdieu überprüft. Zunächst wird das Werk Bourdieus, „Die feinen Unterschiede", in seinem theoretischen sowie empirischen Gehalt dargestellt. Auf die empirischen Ergebnisse Bourdieus wird v. a. was die Resultate zur Ernährung angeht, Bezug genommen. Das darauf folgende Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit der Einordnung des wissenschaftlichen Forschungsfeldes der Ernährung und einiger zentraler gesellschaftlicher sowie sozialer Entwicklungen in diesem Bereich, die einen vertieften Blick auf das Ernährungsverhalten

Pilcher's novel is big, both in size and scope. Yet its charm is in its details. The book's heroine is Judith Dunbar, who is a schoolgirl of 13 when the tale begins in 1935. Sent to boarding school in Cornwall because her parents are posted to Singapore, Judith becomes friends with Loveday Carey-Lewis, who introduces her to a family and an estate, Nancherrow, that is to influence her for the rest of her life. Pilcher does a marvelous job of describing life in England before World War II. Readers, especially Anglophiles, will adore the care Pilcher gives to setting her scenes, decorating them with everything from Cornish wildflowers to china dogs to particular tartan plaids. The same care is evident later in the tale, as Pilcher chronicles the changes brought by the war to the fabric of British life. There is, of course, more to the novel than a carefully rendered historical backdrop. There is a story, too, and a quite involving one even if its outlines are familiar from other melodramas set against the dramatic events of history. As Judith makes her way to adulthood in the midst of great wealth, great tragedy, and, naturally, romance, Pilcher effectively balances the demands of plot with the pleasures of revisiting a different place and time. Fans of the author's previous books, such as September (1990), will know what they're getting into and willingly plunge in headfirst. A truly classic reading!

I couldn't decide what books to read when I have my surgery ~~ and I was browsing through my shelves when I saw this. I remember loving "Shell Seekers" and "September" ~~ so I thought, who can write better than Pilcher when you're groggy and tired? I took the book, read the first fifty pages and was hooked on it from the beginning ~~ Pilcher is a classic storyteller. And her descriptions of Cornwall is absolutely stunning. This book literally beckons you to sit and have a cup of tea, cozy up on the couch and with the radio playing softly in the background ~~ and this book will take you away.

This book focuses on Judith Dunbar over a period of years ~~ before the WWII started and shortly after it ended. She was fourteen when her mother and younger sister went back to Columbo to rejoin their father, before his move to Singapore. Judith was sent to live at a boarding school where she struck up a life-long friendship with Loveday Carey-Lewis, a genteel young girl who loved horses and her home at Nancherrow. Judith becomes immersed in the Carey-Lewis family as well as with her aunts and uncle ~~ and falling in love ... Their stories swept over the years with trimuphs, tragedies amidst the backdrop of the war ~~ love, sorrow and joy. Dreams discovered and shattered ~~ it is a story of a time that has never been lived since then. It is about Cornwall and WWII.

This is a beautifully written novel ~~ poetic and descriptive and lovely. It is also a romantic novel ~~ not a romance novel ~~ just incredibly romantic where it does gloss over the horrids of the war but realistic enough to pierce the heart over the terrors that some of the people had faced. It is also a lush novel ~~ full of thoughts and dreams and letters written in the old-fashioned way ~~ telling stories of lives bygone. It is just an incredible novel ~~ one that I am pleased to have in my possession. Pilcher is one of the few writers in my library that I collect ~~ her writing always beckon you home. This novel is just one of those that you just have to read to know what I am trying to say here.

Heart-Warming Read By Rosamunde Pilcher

If you are a fan of family sagas, love cozy and comforting reads, admire protagonists who endure hardship and survive, then you will love this monumental work by Rosamunde Pilcher.

Set in the days preceeding, during, and after World War II in Cornwall, London, and other other spots, the reader is introduced to Judith Dunbar at age 14. She is left at a girls' school in England while her mother and younger sister Jess go to join Judith's father in Singapore. The separation stretches on for years, and Judith grows through her teen years with the help of new-found friends, the affluent Carey-Lewises, but mostly survives due to her own indomitable spirit.

There is so much to say about a book that goes on for nearly 1,000 pages, but for me the plot was secondary to the endearing characters who populate this book. From Judith to her bestfriend, Loveday Carey-Lewis, the inspiriing Diana, the haunting Gus, the stable Jeremy and the host of minor characters who come to life, this is a riveting read that takes you through the trauma of war and its effects on ordinary people living their lives as best they can. The book is filled with many happy moments and perhaps even more heart-breaking ones, but always there is hope and strong survival skills working to make things right in the end.

There are some books that I know so well, I can pick them up and just start anywhere, anytime, and be whisked away without moving a step. Coming Home is just that.
We meet Judith Dunbar, a 14 year old girl in 1935, as her mother and baby sister are preparing to leave her in an English boarding school and join her father in Singapore. For the next ten years, we follow Judith and her new-found family through love, death, and the outbreak of a war that will tear Judith's loyalties in two.
Rosamunde Pilcher's worlds, as always, are filled with people who you would love to meet and consider friends. The families she writes about -- even the disfunctional ones -- are families you wish you could be a part of, just so that when you finally finish the last chapter, you don't have to leave them forever. (Or, you can just start the book again ... )

Timeless classic given a brilliant update

`Be careful of what you wish for' thunders across the pages of this newly translated classic originally written by the Austrian Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and first published in 1870. A refreshingly vivid prose has been rendered by erotica artist Sardax, who has also created ten unique illustrations that capture the passion and torment of the storyline of one man's near-fatal surrender to a woman.

The main character is Severin von Kusiemski, a man obsessed with the depiction of the Roman Goddess Venus dressed in furs as painted by Titian in his `Venus with a mirror'. He transplants his fevered vision of such a divinity onto a real woman, Wanda von Dunajew, who he gradually seduces into dominating him as a real slave. However, the seduction is not without problems as Severin constantly wrestles with his desire to surrender to the whims of his Mistress while she repeatedly has second thoughts about enslaving him. Wanda genuinely loves Severin and indulges his passions to make him happy although she has to be prodded ever so often to live up to being Severin's Venus. But as they both settle into their new roles of slave and Mistress, Wanda needs less convincing.

The metamorphosis from Wanda to Venus takes Severin on an unexpected journey to a strange land and a stranger role of him literally becoming a servant of her's and to be called Gregor. At this point, a clear slippery slope towards disaster awaits him especially when Wanda muses about taking on a new lover. It's agonizing to read Wanda's depiction of such rivalry through the brutal view of a sought-after lioness: "When the lion who chose her - the one with whom she lives - is attacked by another, the lioness lies low and watches the fight and if her mate is getting the worst of it, she does not help him. She watches him indifferently end his life under the claws of the opponent and follows the stronger victor. That is the nature of the female." Beyond the raw reality of a lion pride, it's only a matter of time before Severin's own pride is challenged beyond all expectation.

There is much to enthrall the reader in this new version that has been laboured over for the past ten years by Sardax. Aside from a distinctly modern feel to his translation as compared to the original text, his exquisitely detailed drawings of key story scenes are a welcome bonus. They could in fact stand alone as a worthy story in their own right, without caption, and be just as riveting, if not more, than any Titian masterpiece. For his countless fans around the world that are transported to dark delights via his art, Sardax has delivered us a fascinating and most welcomed new presentation of a timeless classic.

Brilliant illustrations capture the spirit of the classic novel of female domination and male submission

I recently read Venus in Furs all the way through for the first time, only weeks before learning of the publication of Sardax’s new translation from the German original by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. So I compared the 1920s translation I'd read with Sardax’s, and immediately saw that his is far more fresh and lively, with a contemporary sparkle in its choice of words that nonetheless is evocative of the nineteenth century era in which the book was written.

Venus in Furs is one of the most amazing and erotic novels ever. I was spellbound and totally absorbed in its drama of a submissive man turning his “vanilla” fiancee into his personal fur-clad dominatrix. It is a story of edging...how far a submissive man can go before he transforms his woman into someone who may rule over him for his sensual delight, but as a result may no longer want him as her companion, lover, or husband...

Although it is not explicit in anatomical detail like contemporary erotica, Venus in Furs IS explicit in its depiction of the dynamics of female domination and male submission. There is slavery and brutality and cuckoldry here, and what author von Sacher-Masoch left out in raw sexual detail, anybody can fill in with their imaginations. But the chief glory of Sardax’s version is his illustrations. He is a truly a contemporary master of femdom art and this is his labor of love. Here are captured not only the themes of womanly rule over worshipful man, but the atmosphere of the period (1870) in which the book was originally published in Europe. Whether he does a painting of the book’s narrator Severin being whipped naked by a fur-clad older woman while being held down by servants, or depicts Severin in a train station carrying the heavy suitcases of his haughty dominatrix Wanda as he enacts the role of her servant/slave, Sardax’s illustrations for Venus in Furs transport us into the world of the book as no other pictures of it have ever done. If you enjoy femdom, you will envy Severin his place under the thumb of his mistress Wanda in these vibrant images. Highly recommended to femdom fans and to all those who are interested in the masterworks of erotica.

Pleasantly Pleased

I had heard about Venus in Furs a great deal and how in some ways it was the first of it's kind. I had seen several reviews for different versions and reiterations, some good, some not so good. I truly enjoyed this version. Yes, it is a translation from the original so that flow is different from todays literature but overall, I enjoyed the story. I did find parts a bit odd but again I believe that has to do with the times in which the original was written. I would recommend to others who enjoy this genre.

Enjoyable read

I have raced through Gillian Larkin's series. She is a wonderful storyteller!! She makes the paranormal sound so normal!! Delightful characters. Dialog that draws you into the scene. You just know Kate would ask you in for a cup of tea!!

short and sweet..

I actually read this story mainly because it was free for my new Kindle Fire Hd. I generally prefer mysteries and thrillers..this does have ghosts as part of the story, but not scary ones...it still turned out to be a good short story..and it ended leading in to the 2nd book in a series, so of course now I will be needing to read the others...clever author!

Great fun short read. Humorous and unnerving at times, but fun and enjoyable. I think most of us wonder the why, who, and how come, of some of the items we find in these stores. I too, often have scenarios hit my mind while looking at items. Thank you for the opportunity of trying this author, I enjoyed her writing.

Good, but too short

It was okay, but a bit disappointing. It was too short, only having four chapters. I expected more from it, as I enjoyed the Eighth Doctor in the TV movie. The one-shot companion didn't have much of a personality. There wasn't enough backstory on the alien spore/pathogen. I liked the references to UNIT and Gallifrey.

Great Eighth Doctor Story..........

Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor was the one incarnation of the character to have only one television appearance. That would be the BBC/Universal/Fox co-production that aired in 1996, a projected "back door" pilot that it was said, could have led to a full scale series. It didn't. Viewing figures of almost 10 million in the UK proved that its homeland was still hungry for Doctor Who. Substandard viewing figures in the US didn't reflect this stateside. The Eighth Doctor did go on, first in a BBC Books range of adventures and then in the form of audioplays from a remarkable company called Big Finish (check them out if you haven't already), with McGann himself reprising the role in all new full cast stories. Which brings us to "Spore", by Alex Scarrow, a part of an ongoing series of short stories commemorating Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary. The Doctor arrives without companion here, but soon finds one in Captain Evelyn Chan. A spore has landed on Earth, and released a pathogen that will soon assimilate and eradicate all organic life on Earth. if a particular question is not answered. The Doctor knows who the enemy is; His own planet, Gallifrey had encountered it a thousand years before he was born, and found a way to answer its question and immunize itself from the pathogen's lethal infection. It will be about 50 years before the people of Earth will have advanced to the extent that they can do the same. But the threat is here, and very real, NOW. Scarrow captures Paul McGann's Doctor much more efficiently than many of the aforementioned BBC Books did. You can hear his voice here in everything the Doctor says. The setting, a small town in the middle of a desert in Nevada, provides an eerie, creepy atmosphere for a threat that brings to mind the invaders from "The Thing", and the story is crisp, well paced, and consistently engaging. I think I'm going to be taking a look at the rest of this series, as the entries for both the Ninth and Eighth Doctors have been superb.

Nice little story...

...and a nice job of capturing the tone of the 8th Doctor. It could have been longer, with a bit more suspense.

Also, Marines say "hoo-AH" not "booyah." Quite different meanings.

Excellent!

I bought Barash because I just can't read Miller (Baby Miller is great though). This new version is a great deal - you get the book AND the complete on-line product for one price. The textbook is massive at 1880 pages, full color, and looks nice. I haven't even opened mine. The on-line product is amazing! They published it through Inkling (www.inkling.com), and with this version you get full text access plus all the multimedia extras. All are available on the web or via the iProduct/Android apps. The Inkling app isn't quite as polished as iBooks or Kindle, but their help desk was fast and responsive to a minor issue with my account.

The material itself is very easy to read. I found a few typos and contradictions, but nothing that detracts in a meaningful way. Overall, I am very happy with this version of Barash, making it my go-to source for information.

Exactly what I needed

As an anesthesia resident, it's hard to lug around large volumes for review when you must be light on your feet.

This edition allowed me to download the text/multimedia to my iPhone and iPad for convenient use throughout the day, on the go.

The multimedia integrated with each chapter is amazing and a perfect audio/visual aid to the easy to read text.

All I have is praise for the new edition.

Less interactive than advertised

I ended up buying the 7th edition of the Clinical Anesthesia due to fact that the electronic version was supposed to be more interactive, to include embedded multmedia/video links within the chapters. Once I opened the kindle version I was truly dissapointed. The hyperlinks within each chapter are no longer there (something that was part of the 6th edition). Without these hyperlinks you will have flip through 20 to 30 pages to get anywhere within each chapter. The embeded multimedia links are not working either. It looks like a copied picture of a link.

Even in the introduction of the book it states that the last version looked as if someone had scanned the textbook and put into an electronic format, something they had changed for this version. This version was suppposed be an electronic experience, produced as such from the ground up, incluing all new interactive additions (multimedia links etc). This did not happen.

At this time I'm just scratching my head. How they can mess up the electronic version of such a classic text is beyond me. I'm not sure what happened with the kindle version but somebody dropped the ball big time. Unless this i some type of mistake that they are able to rectify I will request an immediate refund.

Kindle Review: Anne of Green Gables...with a Maine Flair

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is about an unusual, spirited girl who is sent from another part of Maine to be raised by her two aunts in York County. The experience turns out to be, as her mother had predicted, "the making of [her]". The intended audience is the same as that for Anne of Green Gables. A lot of similarities with the Anne-girl such as the use of the expression "stuff and nonsense" and "I'd like to eat color, drink it and sleep in it." Excellent story!

I have downloaded more of this author's books in hopes that they will be as great as this one was. If you liked Anne of Green Gables, or Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, you will like more of Lucy Maud Mongtgomery's series like the "Emily" books or her "Pat" books. You also will like books by Louisa May Alcott such as An Old-Fashioned Girl and Eight Cousins (and its sequel Rose in Bloom). Although it has been a little while since I read them, Pollyanna and A Little Princess are also classics along this line and VERY readable. And I believe that every one of these books is a FREE Kindle download away...

This free Kindle edition of March 17, 2006 was fine, no editing issues of note, just the usual line break/margin unevenness. Actually the first nice usage that I have seen of italics in this book, a long passage that is a story that Rebecca writes in italics, very readable.

Awesome read!

Two better series

I got all huffy reading this that it was a blatant Anne of Green Gables/Emily of New Moon rip off, but then read that came out first and L. M. Montgomery had read it. I will say the cover is much better than the original.

Too much going on without enough follow thru

Several immediate issues come to mind: the cover is great, yet has nothing to do with the story. The synopsis of this book covers only the first 15-20% of the book, and there all manner of somewhat overused themes in the rest: love triangle, one night stand pregnancy, mysterious dead sister haunting or maybe she's just nuts...it's too much, and character development lags painfully behind. Also, the h believes her sole mission in life is to crank out babies, which I find a strange belief for a woman with a law degree. Her friends are unlikeable & the h isn't much of a friend in several instances. Also, the "sexy role-playing" lasts about 5 seconds, making it kindof pointless.

This book is written fairly well from a grammar & spelling point. The author just needs to stick with a genre and really get to know her characters before writing about them.

Edwin and Abby have dated before, been lovers, bought a house together, but the timing was never right and they were just roommates. After university graduation, Edwin knows what he wants. He wants Abby. She has never left his heart, and he wants her to return to his bed. Edwin has never left her heart either, but she is afraid to be hurt again. When Edwin proposes a no-strings-attached relationship, Abby gives in to her dreams, but she isn't ready to give up on her life-plan. When she gives Eddy an ultimatum, will he follow his heart or allow rebelliousness dictate the course of their relationship?
This is Ms. Simpson's debut novel and it is self-published, so the writing is unpolished, but don't let that stop you from reading. I loved this story and I'm looking forward to seeing where it leads. The full trilogy is now available, so there will be no waiting to read Abby and Edwin's story from beginning to end. There is also the question of the red glowing eyes that Abby sees when she's stressed. Is she being stalked? Perhaps from the grave?
