Vague and full of misinformation

There's not a terrible amount of information here, and most of it is so vague and general as to be useless. The author tells us that she owns thee flights (i.e., sets) of arrows- that might mean as many as 36, or as few as 9. Someone who's only made 36 arrows certainly isn't someone you'd go to for advice on arrow making. She also seems unfamiliar with much of the terminology of arrow making- she refers to "nocks made directly from the shaft of the arrow" rather than the common term, self nocks. She mentions that changing the weight of the arrow point will change the point of impact, but neglects to note that it will change the effective spine of the arrow as well. She states that "you will need to match your bow to the weight and length of the arrow shaft" which sounds nonsensical. One matches the arrow's spine to the weight of the bow and the length of the draw.

The experienced archer reading this short (36 page) pamphlet may well wonder if the author has every actually made an arrow- or drawn a bow. There's far more actual, useful information on arrow making to be found in archery forums, and at the sites of companies selling fletching jigs and arrow making supplies.

It is what you need to know

This book is well-written in dry English, and germane to the sport of English longbow archery. It that's your passion, indulge your technical lusts in this book. If you just want to know how to make good arrows, this book is still good, depending on how the breadth of knowledge you desire. I got it pretty cheap, so it was worth it. YouTube has a bunch of simpler how-to's for the simpler shooters.

Good Information, Too Much Self-Promotion

This is a good book but only rates three stars because of the multitude of sales pitches. I feel like this was written to sell the author's supplements (and webinars, other books, and other goodies) rather than to help people out. One link to the author's stores and resources would have been enough.

That being said, I've learned a couple of other tricks, not in this book, that actually work. I've been teaching adults most of my adult life, and they often come to me with personal issues. Constipation is one of them. (I primarily teach Theatre Arts and few things will shut down a body faster than stage fright.)

Taking a quality magnesium (Pure Encapsulations is a quality company) with P5P (activated D3) will cure constipation. It's a juggling act, getting a person's own dose right, but it does work. Another quick little trick is to buy the cheapest supermarket brand of magnesium. The cheapest! In tablet form, because tablets aren't absorbed as easily as capsules. The idea is for the magnesium to not absorb, but to stay in the intestines, absorbing water and keeping things lubed. Just a couple of things people tell me really do work.

This book gives good information but isn't as detailed as others I've learned from. It's short, informative, and a good resource, but those persistent ads are really terribly annoying. Either be an author or a salesperson. Trying to combine the two just doesn't work.

About the Author
Darrin Mason has worked much of his adult life as a freelance cartoonist (he is an Australian Cartoon Award winner) whose work has appeared in a number of Australian newspapers and magazines (People magazine and The Truth newspaper to name but two) and as a producer at 4BC radio in Brisbane, Australia. He is one hell of a funny guy with a dark sense of humor who now writes stories that make as much light as possible of the things he finds there. Above all else though, he is a fan of Batman. (The 1960s TV version, the late 1980s/early 1990s Michael Keaton version, and the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale trilogy are the only ones that matter. You can forget the rest). As the Metallica song goes, nothing else matters.

A satirical parody... an extreme example... 4 1/2 Stars

"The Wicked Witch of the West: Munchkin Killer" is a satirical parody by Darrin Mason. This Kindle e-book was a 169 Kb download (approx. 21 printed pages) and sold for $1.49 at the time of writing this review.

General theme

Dorothy, accidentally kills The Wicked Witch of the East (and you know who's sister)... and now 'you know who' is a tad unhappy. This then is a rather off-beat look at another possible (although highly unlikely), encounter between Dorothy and The Wicked Witch of the West".

Some thoughts on "The Wicked... Munchkin Killer"...

1.) a short, funny parody (at times very funny) that is well written... and in it's own unique style.

2.) it features some modern day weaponry, cameo appearances by some famous (living and dead) persons, and excessive crude and coarse language.

Impression:
A short parody that will be appreciated by only a select few... maybe those who harbor a weird sense of humor (that would be me... lol) and are attuned to those really, really stupid and demented tales like the one found here. Oh, and also those that are not particularly bothered by an abundance of gratuitously used f-bombs. (loss of 1/2 Star)

Hysterical, imaginative, patently adult parody

Let me start off by saying if you're looking for any kind of continuation, prelude, or other such business related to the chidren's Wizard of Oz, please look elsewhere. This is pure adult fun, with the f-bomb tossed around nearly every other sentence. With that said, if you would like a wild, seat of your pants ride in the shoes of the Wicked Witch as she tries to gun down Dorothy, the Tin Man, and all those pesky munchkins, you might just love this book! It is wildly creative, featuring every possible parody, including Harry Potter, Elvis, Jesus, and the master himself (yes, Stephen King). I read this book in record time, grinning from the first to the last sentence. Maybe it was the mood I was in tonight, but this book had me cracking up. My only wish is that Mr. Mason would have included some of his award-winning cartoons (hint, hint).

An outstanding example of a parody at its finest! One example follows another in this short book which entertained me throughout. A couple of minor spoilers follow.When Dorothy uttered "Screw the yellow brick road" close to the beginning, I knew I was in for a fun ride. And, the reader is privy to the fact that Auntie Em closed the trap door before Dorothy arrived. And, that is the end of a couple of minor spoilers.

The description of Glinda is priceless. Not sure that I have ever read such a succinct description of an alcoholic previously. I had a laugh out loud moment, too, when the Wicked Witch of the West was on the exercise bike. She pedaled with such intensity and strength. All I can say is that the ride was worth her pedaling.

Must check on other books by this author. Always good to get a genuine chuckle...

Most highly recommended.

Not much of a romance

I really felt that this book was a HFN story rather than a HEA story. Levi was nothing but mean to Faith for most of the book, and for no plausible reason. It is plain as day that he flat out doesn't like her. He only seemed to like her boobs. I don't think he liked her much even after they started having sex (I won't say dating because they never dated. It was just a booty call relationship.). I think Faith was just dazzled by her first foray into the joys of heterosexual sex so she didn't want to notice that Levi had the emotional depth of thimble. How many times does a guy have to look at you with disdain before you get a clue and move on. I see them becoming her grandparents someday. Not very romantic for a romance. The best part of the book was Faith's evolving relationship with Jeremy. That part felt emotional and real to me.

No "relationship" in this romance

Do not purchase this book if you are looking for a traditional romance. I persevered through reading it simply because I wanted to be able to review it; giving it the benefit of the doubt. Higgins humor is amusing at first although the rhythm of the book never seemed to be in sync. At times there were sections of hi-jinks from the cast of characters that comprise the Holland family that were supposed to be funny but devolved into more irritating than anything else. Higgins also tried really hard to make this world seem like something out of a Disney Channel show whacky-family-friends story. It got to the point that it started to feel contrived and tiring. The "tension" of the story was so thin that it did not need 350 pages prior to the big "reveal"-by that point I didn't really care.

The characters of Faith and Levi could have been something but Higgins never created any kind of "romance" between them. I read past 200 pages and it was still at the point where Faith doesn't know if he (Levi) can even stand her and when it is told from Levi's point of view it's the same story. There was no true-romance between the two. Levi is depicted as a monosyllabic character that communicates mostly through stares and Faith is annoyingly perky and upbeat. Levi actually has more dialogue and shows more empathy for his gay best friend Jeremy who happens to be the man that dumped Faith at the alter.

Overall I would not recommend this book unless you want a story about a family of seemingly "loveable" characters and two protagonist that have a fling on the periphery of the story that somehow turns into a "relationship" with no explanation as to why or whether they could even stand each other and no true interaction between the two. This book was a test of my endurance to get through-I will not be picking up a Higgins book anytime soon.

I loved and hated it at the same time

I absolutely loved and hated this book at the same time. There were times I just wanted to just chuck this book and call it a day but I didn't. Then there were times I was so glad I didn't chuck the book and wished it would go on and on. So here is what I loved and hated about the book. Spoilers below.

~Loved~
Levi is such a man's man. He isn't afraid to take charge and do things no matter how mundane and sometimes not in his job description it may be. He is pretty messed up and definitely has some abandonment issues but he doe not at all let them limit his life. He makes lemonade whenever life throws him a lemon. He has sooooo much oozing sex appeal that would make any woman want to purr when he is around.

Faith is able to have a sunny outlook on life no matter what is thrown at her. Fiance who comes out of the closet just before vows, dead mother and all. And when she let's down those walls, oh nellie, boy does she feel. And it is so beautifully emotional.

When there was an emotional scene, ie, the airport scene when Faith breaks down after her almost marriage and a few others after that I cried right next to her. Those scenes are what redeemed the book for me. They were so right in flavor and character and feeling that I sniffed and wiped tears while turning pages. I loved that about the book. Even when Levi finally confronts his past. Man. Just perfect.

The seizure training that was imparted to the reader was unusually great. It is so hard to break the misnomer that items need to be shoved in someones mouth if having a seizure. I love how Kristan Higgins even writes how it is not important to call 911 unless the seizure lasts more than five minutes. It has shocked more than one person when I have instructed them of this. To just watch and be with the person seizing and make sure they don't get hurt and put them on their side so they don't asphyxiate. She didn't mention the possibility of losing control of stomach, bowels, and/or bladder but the quick information was wonderful to see in a book. It's terrifying to witness first hand, yet how the characters respectfully handled it, even when in High School. I was impressed the subject was used for a main character.

And lastly, again about Faith seizures. Her being epileptic didn't make her weak. It didn't make her family scared of their own shadow when Faith was around. They didn't treat her like a china doll in any respect. No one in her circle did. They were so real and so loving and just there and protective of her enough to let her lead a normal life that it was admirably written.

=Hated=
The towns people really got on my nerves. They seemed way too needy to be able to live on their own. Who seriously calls the police because a dog is under the house with their chicken? I mean seriously. And then the about town chatter. I guess it is supposed to be reminiscent of small town, which makes me so grateful I do not live in one.

Jeremy is just too likable. Everyone just absolutely loves him and he is always around. Granted we don't really get to meet him til almost 200 pages in but by then we hear how he walks the world with a cape flapping in the wind carrying his medical bag. He just really had the personality of a Golden Retriever. Such a lovable puppy. I get how he broke Faith's heart and he is an important plot point but by the time we got 200 pages in I was so over it.

The sad jokes that were used in the book from the gold digger not girlfriend to the transvestite almost hook up. To the herbivore carrot killer who shows up in a brown sack of a dress and proceeds to turn her veggie tray into mulch before everyone's eyes. Even the scene when Faith tries to crawl out of the bathroom window and her "boobage", not my word, is just hanging out.

Blue, Faith's lovable companion sounds just like a dog who isn't getting enough exercise but you still love him. Unfortunately at almost 3/4 of the book he starts humping everything and it is now part of all of his commentary? That just got on my last nerve.

Faith's grandparents. Seriously, why did they have to be written so acidic? I wanted to like them but couldn't.

Sometimes when there was a large group the background chatter basically made me feel like I was reading static. It was just a bit on the too much side. The better scenes were when there were just a few people present and there was not too much filler noise. I get the whole "trying to give the book color" business but it was more distracting then anything else.

Lastly, and this is a big one for me. Epileptics while they can drink an occasional glass or two, they should never get drunk. On more than one occasion Faith breaks these rules and she is a medicated epileptic who has had her dog therapy trained. This is in my opinion, irresponsible writing.

Like I said earlier I loved and hated the book. Now I cold go on and on. Point by point but I won't. All-in-all I come in at the middle ground for star rating of it. The emotional level of the book is very high and felt so real. Yet, the things I found annoying or despicable made me feel like giving it up. Given how I feel pulled in both directions I feel it is safe to say The Best Man is really a three star book. Dead center. Middle of the ground. But those tears will come if you read it.

Too much self-advertising

I've enjoyed Graden's previous books much more. There is not much new information in this book, and the book contains too much advertising of his own companies and his former student's companies. It seems that the whole purpose of the book is to make you a customer of his company. Not worth buying.

This book fulfils a keenly-felt need for a modern, comprehensive dictionary of Scottish Gaelic into English. The numerous examples of usage and idiom in this work have been modelled on examples culled from modern literature, and encompass many registers ranging from modern colloquial speech, to more elaborate literary constructions. The main contemporary terms and idiomatic phraseology, often not available in other dictionaries, provide excellent models for easier language learning. In addition to the main dictionary, the volume contains introductory material, providing guidance on using the dictionary, spelling and pronunciation. There are also twelve useful appendices which cover not only the various parts of speech, lenition and proper nouns, but also address the more difficult issues of expressing time, direction and numerals. About the Author
Mr Colin Mark, a Classics graduate of Aberdeen University, taught in several schools over a period of forty years. During that time he took up the study of Gaelic and, within a few years, had written Gaelic Verbs (Glasgow University Press, 1986) before embarking upon the present work.

If you could have only one Gaelic dictionary, get this one.

This is by far the most expensive Gaelic dictionary available today. It is worth the price. It has an immense store of idiomatic uses and examples that are found in no other dictionary. The entries for especially important words, such as irregular verbs, are frequently several pages long, and cover many meanings, usages and variations. The appendices alone would make a small, but very useful reference grammar.
There are only three other dictionaries with which it can be usefully compared: the two older dictionaries, those of Dwelly and MacLennan, and the recently published dictionary by Angus Watson. Mark's dictionary is much easier to read than Dwelly's; it has a smaller vocabulary coverage, but the omissions are of words that have become archaic and are now rarely, if ever, used. Examples of usage are far more numerous. MacLennan's dictionary has the advantage of being the only large dictionary with an English-to-Gaelic section. MacLennan's Gaelic-to-English section is totally outclassed by Mark's dictionary. Watson's dictionary has a much smaller vocabulary coverage than Mark's weighty tome, but has a number of definitions which are in some way better, for example "seadh", which in Watson is seen to derive from the older "is eadh", where "eadh" is the now-obsolete neuter pronoun, rendered useless by the demise of the neuter gender. Watson has only two appendices, a table of definite articles and a much longer one of irregular verbs. Mark has no comparable appendix; he puts his extensive information on the irregular verbs in the dictionary entries; he does have an extensive appendix on the Gaelic verb which is quite different from Watson's appendix.
The first dictionary that I use it Watson's - it's small size makes it easier to find an entry, but missing words very frequently send me to Mark's dictionary. Dwelly's is the last resort, when an archaic word or usage must be found. I rarely use MacLennan's dictionary now that I have the ones by Mark and Watson.

Absolutely indispensable

This is one of the very best Gaelic dictionaries, and is absolutely indispensable for the serious student of the language. It provides extensive, detailed coverage of the language as currently used in prose and the media, filling the gap between Dwelly's and modern usage. In addition, there are no fewer than twelve excellent appendices, containg all sorts of valuable information on grammar and usage, much of which isn't to be found in other dictionaries or textbooks. If you are a serious student of the Scottish Gaelic language, if you read any Gaelic literature, you need this dictionary. I use it, quite literally, almost every day.
