About the Author
Kristen Ashley grew up in Indiana but has lived in Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Badass Hot Guy - Book 3
By Jean
Raid is the third book in Kristen Ashley's Unfinished Heroes series, following Knight (The Unfinished Hero Series) and Creed (Unfinished Heroes).
Yes, I am a huge fan of KA's work. Yes, I gave this book 3 stars (which, by the way, does NOT mean I hated it; it means I thought it was "OK"). Yes, I expect all of KA's fans to start immediately marking this review as "unhelpful" and, yes, I decided to write it anyway.
What's the point of writing reviews (or reading them, either) if they're not honest? If a reader honestly thinks a book was worthy of 5 stars then, by all means, they should give it the 5 stars. But if a reviewer is giving a book 5 stars strictly on the basis of author loyalty, then the whole reviewing system becomes worthless for the potential readers of any given book. Do you get me?
OK, off my soapbox and on to the book. This is the story of alpha hot guy Raiden Ulysses Miller, former marine, current "off the grid" bounty hunter and Hanna Bourdeaux, a quiet, nice girl who enjoys books and movies and creates designer afghans for a living - and who has been in love with Raid since she was 6 years old.
I liked Hanna and I liked Raid, but... to me, Raid was just a rehashed combination of Knight and Hawk (from Mystery Man). In fact, he spoke exactly like Knight. There wasn't too much of anything original about the character. Hanna was a combination of Gwen (also from Mystery Man) and Lexie (from Lady Luck), two of my favorite KA heroines, but she lacked the strength of personality of either of them. Again, nothing to make her stand out as a character to love.
Knight and Anya, Creed and Sylvie, Nick Sebring and, unexpectedly, Marcus Sloane (from the Rock Chicks series) all make brief appearances in this book. And I will give my vote to Hanna's grandmother as being the book's best character.
I guess if you've devoured all of KA's books, as I have, then you will want to read this book - but I think the "sameness" of it will be readily apparent. If you are new to KA's work, you might enjoy it more. Although this is Book 3 of the series, I believe it can be read as a standalone without there being any confusion regarding back stories.
Adult language and sexual content.

Good but not Great
By Amazon Customer
I really love Kristen, she has a writing style that just rocks my world. In this book though it was the first time I was ever a bit disappointed. Compared to all her other books this one just felt lacking. The book was short, felt rushed (meeting a deadline?) and not as intense.
*spoiler* She almost went the way of Knight by making a reference to spanking, and then we never hear about it again. Raid likes to play apparently, but it seems only one sex scene (and there are not a lot) even comes close to being kinky.
I still enjoyed this book but it was a bit of a let down for me. I just hope she realizes that I will be willing to wait just that much longer for her next book if it is a step up from this one.

This book, I truly don't know if I can do it justice. Let me preface my review by saying, my husband did 2 tours in Iraq, and that I mention this because Raid, the hero of this story, is a war veteran himself and he carries a lot of weight on his soul because of it. I completely understood this part of our veterans before this book but, after reading this book, I had an even greater love and respect and outlook for them. Ok. Here goes my attempt to write a review of a book that changed my life, made me cry, made me laugh, and leaves me with a happy feeling every time i think about it's characters.
This book is about Raiden Ulysses Miller, a small town 'god' in his youth and real life hero when he grows up. Hannah, our heroine, has had a crush on him since she was 6 years old and he picked her to be on his team at her Grams yearly picnic. Hannah's character is funny and shy and even though she has watched Raid from afar, which sounds like a girl who isn't very sure of herself, she's actually very confident! This sometimes comes across in hilarious ways and makes Hannah so endearing to me! Even when she finds herself in situations that make her a bit uncomfortable, she's very confident in the decisions she makes. Grams is the ultimate grandmother, and she has shown me the type of grandmother I want to be one day. She decides that Raiden will make the perfect man for her Hannah and she sets about meddling to make that happen. She does this in the form of sweet talking him into mowing her yard, then needing Hannah come over and they sit on the porch and admire him together. She does all her meddling in hilarious ways and I love her and Hannah's relationship. When she realizes that Hannah and Raid are getting serious, she gives Hannah some awesome advice that I also took to heart and perfectly described why I put up with my husbands demons in a way that I have never been able to articulate myself.
'If you're the kind of woman who can withstand the blaze of hellfire he's got burning inside, he battles that and wins, you will know nothing for the rest of your life, no taste, no experience, not even the birth of your children that will be sweeter than the love he'll have for you.'
And that is the God's honest truth. That quote hit home, as does this whole book, which is why I recommend it so highly. The writing and emotion is so good and strong, you fall in love with Raid right along side Hannah and you want her to battle the flames, You root for them.
Raiden is your perfect Alpha male. He's all man. He owns up to the fact that he didn't really notice Hannah until she put in the effort to be noticed, meaning she started dressing to show off her figure and in a way that showed her femininity yet still left something to the imagination. Raid has a lot of demons and when he gets out of the military, he goes to work in a line of business that's not exactly legal, which is the theme to her unfinished heroes series; good men involved in a not so good business, but trying to do it for the right reasons. He is taken by all that is Hannah and there is something that he says to her in the book that after i read it, i set my kindle down and found my husband, just so I could hug him.
'You know why we do that s***? It's not for God, babe. And it's not for country.....You do it for her. You do it to keep her safe. You plant kids inside her, or hope to, you do it for them. You get home in one piece, she's your reward...You're my reward, Hannah......You go over there, far f****** away, you see s***, you do s***, you get through it knowin' that's home....that girl...carefree because you sweat and bleed so that's what she can be.'
This book is the best interpretation I have read, so far, of a military man with demons and the girl who decides to love him though it. it's beautiful, and Raid is beautiful, and Hannah and her capacity to love is beautiful.
Ok, now a little about the actual story. Raid is hired to find out who is shipping drugs and where they are doing it from. He is not hired by the police to do this but by his boss, who is losing money to this outside drug ring. He traces it back to his hometown and finds out that Hannah, unbeknownst to her, is very deeply involved. Once Hannah gets on his radar and he realizes, very quickly might i add, that she is indeed his reward for the hell he went through overseas, he stops at nothing to have her, all of her. Once Hannah decides she is the type of woman to withstand hell fire and that she wants to be the one to help Raid, to love him, and be his reward, she sets about doing it with no regret. When things get rough, they still make it through. Raid helps to bring out a side of Hannah she didn't know she had, sexually and in every day life. He shows her that she is beautiful and whats more, he makes her believe it and see it. And she shows him that even scarred, he is wonderful, he is loved, and he deserves 'his reward'. Besides the love scenes, which are so hot that if you don't get hot reading them then you should go to the doctor and make sure you aren't actually dead, the story here of a real life Hero and the girl that loved him is moving, and wonderful, and just...beautiful. I probably haven't done this story justice but, if you are looking for a book that is funny, has a wonderful story, great love scenes, and characters written so well that they stick with you for the rest of your life, please take a chance on this book. More than that, take a chance on Kristen Ashley, because I haven't read one book by her (and I've literally read every single book she has written) that didn't move me or impact me. Her writing is just that good.
