Better Than the Average Frothy Bodice Ripper

I'm a sucker for anything Tudor. I surely wouldn't want to have LIVED in Tudor England but I enjoy the heck out of a book that opens a window on that time and place and let's me look my fill. The author has created a believable narrator in a young lady in waiting that is neither a bit of knight-dependent fluff OR a sword wielding fearless shield maiden that is such a fixture in much current fiction. Anne Boleyn (Ambition's Queen), whom the narrator serves, is also a believable interpretation. She is neither the wild eyed hellion of "The Other Boleyn Girl" nor the tragic flower of "Anne of the Thousand Days". Just a good read. You already know how it ends...

Poorly written

I couldn't even get through the free sample - was this self-edited?
To give a single example, Chapter Three begins:

"Again Mark again" The queen ordered in her apartments at Greenwich.

Similarly to this sentence, the book (or at least the first few chapters) is lacking in punctuation marks, has incorrect capitalisation and sounds as if it were written as a school assignment. The writing is poor, and filled with stilted dialogue.
Cannot recommend.

Fly on the Wall View

People who enjoy reading historical books/novels often wish they could have been a "fly on the wall" as a witness to the actual events portrayed in the book. This novel on Anne Boleyn gives the reader that very opportunity, as far as a book can provide.
As a fan of Tudor Era books, I really enjoyed this rendition of Anne Boleyn's story. The central character, Bridget Manning, is fictitious, based perhaps on an unnamed historical young woman of the queen's maids of honor. The story remains with Bridget at all times, never changing to another scene elsewhere. So we see Queen Anne's behavior, reactions, joys and distresses from the perspective of an eye witness. V.E. Lynne expertly incorporates the documented, historic events as they occurred with Bridget Manning's fictitious, but very credible, inclusion.
The story begins with the downfall of Anne Boleyn's relationship with King Henry VIII. It continues with the tragic and frustrating events that led to her execution. What is most fascinating in this book is the aftermath of the beheading. Most stories on this topic leave us with the execution, but in this case, the maids of honor are required/want to remove and see to the burial of the queen's body. There are some excellent words exchanged between Bridget and various characters, mostly antagonists in the final chapter and epilogue. The character Bridget Manning is given an impressive gift of words!
