Oh Man...Know Thyself

Rudolf Steiner's plays must be the theater world's best kept secret, apart from the wisdom imparted by Steiner himself.
Since discovering these spiritual dramas I have come to know all four complete published translations in English:
- Harry Collison (1919)
- Hans & Ruth Pusch (1973)
- Adam Bittleston (1982)
- J.C. McCulloch (2004)
...and have also come to own the other more obscure English versions of:
- Arvia MacKaye's (1st)
- Adrian Locher & Michael Burton's (4th)
- Alexander Gifford's (1st, 2nd & 3rd)
- Richard Ramsbotham's (3rd & 4th)
- Barbara Renold, Glen Williamson and John Alexandra's(revised Pusch 1-4)
I must admit though that the Pusch renditions are the most widely known (probably because he was student of Rudolf and Marie Steiner himself and acted in many productions of the plays themselves) but they are not easily understandable to the heart nor the intellect. His translations (which his wife collaborated on) have a certain 'authority'. They are direct and to the point...but his word choices and verse layout are difficult to comprehend. Because they are the most widely published, the Pusch translations are the ones that are most often used in performances and study groups.
Mr. Collison's versions on the other hand were the first English translations (from the 1920's) and holds a special place since the translator also knew and worked with Steiner, when Steiner visited England. They are reproduced on the rsarchive.org for free, but are quite wordy and archaic ie: thou, thy, wilt, wouldst, likest etc. (which have a wonderful beauty, but in my opinion take the reader away from the gravity of the story lines) thereby somewhat lessening the modernity of the plays.
The Bittleston translations are easy to digest. Adam Bittleston was a priest for the Christian Community in England who helped Francis Edmunds set up Emerson College in the 60's. His translations are warm and musical, and much better than Pusch's contrived English. It is a shame that they are not available anymore.
The recent McCulloch translations (a mysterious Canadian figure) are in my opinion right in tempo and language...using a contemporary idiom. He brings out the wonderful colors and playfulness of these plays, and at the same time comes the closest to a literal translation. I find myself referring to them more and more.

Beautiful book containing all four Steiner Mystery Dramas. Layout and typeset is excellent, and the four seals on the beautiful front cover make it an extremely attractive volume.
