Time and Again (The History Mystery Series Book 1), by Deborah Heal

An old house + A new computer program = The travel opportunity of a lifetime…to another century.

Abby Thomas is spending the summer in a run-down old house with a bratty pre-teen named Merrideth she is supposed to tutor. It’s not her idea of a dream job, but it does come with perks.

There’s John Roberts, a devastatingly attractive neighbor who is almost too wonderful to be real.

And then there’s the virtual trip to the 19th century she gets to take via a strange computer program called Beautiful Houses—also too amazing to be real! No one knows how it works, but with the program, Abby can rewind and fast-forward the lives of all the people who ever lived in the house, including that of young Charlotte Miles.

In 1858, Charlotte’s house is a train stop on the Alton & Chicago Line. And she is stuck there serving meals to the passengers, wondering if she’ll ever get to have any fun. But then she meets two travelers who change her life forever.

There’s James McGuire with whom she falls in love. And there’s his boss, a young Springfield lawyer named Abraham Lincoln. His debate with political opponent Stephen Douglas catapults him onto the national stage and leads to his presidency during the dark days of the Civil War. Hearing Abraham Lincoln pour out his heart on the debate stage inspires Charlotte Miles to take up the cause of abolition and to turn her house into a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Abby and Merrideth gain new perspective on their own lives as time and again they see God’s plans to bless Charlotte Miles and the other inhabitants of the old house unfold on their computer screen.

What Readers Are Saying…
“Loved this book!!! I read the whole first series very fast because I could not put the books down. I love history so a computer program that takes you "virtually" back in time was a hook for me! I normally just read historical fiction, but this contemporary novel caught my interest and has kept it through the entire series, as into the Rewinding Time series.”  (Candace E. Winegar)

“Anytime an author takes research seriously, I fall in love! I will be getting the next part of the trilogy soon. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” (Stacy Wilson)

“When I first purchased the book I thought the characters would time travel back, but instead the way it was done was even better.” (Gloria Baikauskas)

“Most enjoyable read. Got me ready for seconds and thirds. So do yourself a favor and buy the set.”

“A great spin on time travel, or time surfing I should say. I couldn't put it down. Characters are believable and there were no annoying editing issues. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy!”  (Maralynda Kernutton)

“Excellent read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has a mixture of everything I enjoy reading about: God, history, mystery, time travel.”

“I was looking for a 'Christian' Science Fiction story and found it: Time and Again.I liked it a lot; then I read all six books in two weeks. The story has Christianity, Science Fiction, History, Humor, and Humanity.” (Byron Faulder)

“What a fun and interesting read! You'll want to get all three books, without a doubt. Deborah Heal has the expertise to make you want to know more about our history and to give her characters personality! I look forward to reading her other series.”  (Oma T.)

“They are so different from most other books I have read. I loved the step back in history. So well written. I will certainly purchase more by this author.”

Review
"What really made the story unique was how she brought the past to life via a computer program. While this book is geared toward teens, I think that anyone who enjoys contemporary and historical fiction woven together will certainly enjoy this book. On a scale of one to five I would easily give this book a six! Highly recommended."
--Brenda Casto, Amazon reviewer

"As the title of this book indicates, the plot is twofold, part of it taking place in the present and part of it in the past. In the present, Merrideth has more to deal with than any normal eleven-year-old child. Through a time travel computer, Merrideth and Abby visit the past. Deborah Heal skillfully navigates back and forth between the past and present. Her transitions are smooth and well done. This is an amazing book with strong Christian undercurrents. The characters are likable and I really cared about them. I was so captivated by this book that I read it in one sitting. I really did not want it to end. I've always enjoyed history and this book brings the Civil War era to life. I recommend this book for upper elementary and older readers. This is part of a new series and I look forward to reading the next installment."--Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite

From the Author
Genre:I think of my Time and Again trilogy and Rewinding Time Series as History-Mysteries, or to borrow a term from a fellow writer--"Faction." The time travel aspect immediately puts it in the science fiction category, but don't expect to find aliens. The stories are firmly attached to the real world. (BTW, it's only virtual time travel, because I didn't want to mess with the whole space/time continuum thingy. You're welcome.) They are also historical fiction, taking the reader back to real people and events. Their biblical themes make the stories appropriate for the Christian fiction category, although I tried to use a light hand here. I don't believe secular readers will feel bludgeoned.  Audience:The main character in the trilogy, starting with Time and Again, is college student Abby Thomas, and they are suitable for adults and older teens. Although the trilogy is a squeaky clean read, the themes and topics are heavy (especially in Unclaimed Legacy and Every Hill and Mountain), too heavy--in my opinion--for pre-teens. Once Again, book 1 in the Rewinding Time Series stars Merrideth Randall, a college history professor, and is geared toward adults.

Encore!
By Mary K. Wieseman
Time and Again, Charlotte of Miles Station is must read for those who love history, uplifting themes, and well conceived characters. As a language arts teacher, I am often dismayed by the lack of writing skills shown by many popular authors. It was truly refreshing to meet normal (but not sanctimonious) characters who live normal (but not perfect) lives. The threads of the plot (present day and Southern Illinois history) were deftly entwined. The author's mastery of description is what truly kept me reading. You can rest assured that there are several passages of this novel that will find a place in my descriptive writing lessons!

The author has created characters with whom I want to spend more time, and I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Very engaging!
By Tiffany A. Harkleroad
When Abby volunteered to be a tutor over her summer break from college, she had no idea what she would get into. Abby ends up living with Merrideth, a sullen preteen dealing with being a child of divorce, and Pat, her well meaning but largely absent mother. Merrideth is resistant to Abby, and spends most of her time complaining that she misses living in the city. When Abby and Merrideth learn that the house they are in is full of history, and that this history can play out in real time on a program on Merrideth's computer, the girls form a very unique and powerful bond.

Let me start off by saying this book had a very unique premise to me, sort of a "Back to the Future" meets virtual reality, with a little dash of "Seventh Heaven" thrown in. I loved the idea of this book being focused on several generations of women. Abby and Merrideth are wonderfully developed characters, and I loved watching them bond over the history behind the house and its previous inhabitants. I though Merrideth was a fairly accurate representation of a sullen tween girl with a tense family life. I actually felt a lot of sympathy toward Pat's character, what little we saw of her. I think there is more to her story.

I felt like this book had two distinct storyworlds, one in the present, and one in the past, and both were developed in rich detail. The historical aspects of the story were particularly fascinating to me, and I really loved learning the backstory to the house and town. I liked how real historical facts were woven into that backstory as well. I was a little confused about the technical aspects behind the computer program, and whether or not it was a program or internet based; the plot could have been just a bit tighter and more clear regarding the program, but I do understand that the writing may have been intentionally ambiguous in order to build mystery.

There is a definite Christian flavor to the book, without being preachy or over the top. Abby's character is a Christian, though she has her flaws, and there are some scenes where biblical principles are discussed, but I think that the book still has secular appeal. The book is actually appropriate for both young adult and adult readers. All in all, I found this an engaging, entertaining read, and I hope that there are more stories to follow.

Time and Again- Highly recommended for YA and Adult book clubs! A story crossing three genres.
By LAWonder10
Time and Again' by Deborah Heal is an unparalleled story of Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Historical fiction all into on one extraordinary tale!

Abby decides to do some volunteer summer tutoring for a student during her summer break. It will give her some good experience - and perhaps a recommendation - after she completes her final year earning teaching degree at the university. Is Abby "in over her head" with this experience?

Eleven year old Merridith and her mother move away from her father and his new girlfriend, her friends and her school, after her parents divorce. Meredith is angry and feels defeated. She resents it all! She will not make it easy for her mother or new tutor. Maybe her dad will come and get her and take her back. She has more than one problem that drives people away from her. Will she do anything about it?

These are the two key people in the first book of this intriguing trilogy. Other characters are introduced but the challenge begins with these two individuals.

Who is in the computer room during each night when everyone should be in bed?

Deborah Heal has successfully created a unique story that YA and Adults will both enjoy. The characters seem so real the reader will feel he/she knows them. The addition of characters and intrigue steadily builds until the very end. The ending gently fades, leaving the reader wanting more but not feeling exasperated with abruptness.

The descriptiveness is complete so the picture of the background scenery is vivid in ones mind.
However, there are two book covers I have seen. I think it would have been great to slightly combine the two. It would have been more visually appealing.

All in all, I still have to offer a Five Stars rating in reviewing this book. It was very good writing and never dragged.

I was generously sent this book by the author for an honest review of which I have given.
