It began on the morning of December 16, 1944, when a quarter-million German troops stormed a thinly defended American line and crossed into the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg. The architect of the plan, Adolph Hitler, had postponed the attack nearly a week awaiting bad weather that would ground the Allied planes that controlled the skies of Europe. The objective: to capture the Belgian port of Antwerp, and to kill of as many Americans as possible along the way.
The Allied Expeditionary Forces under General Dwight D. Eisenhower were caught sleeping by the surprise offensive. Tens of thousands of American soldiers scrambled to stanch the attack, dispatched to dozens of key road centers and choke points across the Ardennes. Among them was Major General Maurice Rose, the legendary commander of the 3rd Armored Division, who found himself in his toughest fight without the firepower of two of his three combat commands. Outgunned and blind without air reconnaissance and support, Rose's depleted division fell back to the bridge village of Hotton with orders to find and engage the enemy, leaving behind a mixed bag of rear-guard troops believing they were out of harm's way. They weren't, and in the ensuing days the struggle to hold Hotton would be at the epicenter of the Second World War.
Intensely described and grippingly told, The Hotton Report is a blow-by-blow account of this critical battle, and captures the fierce fighting across the Ardennes during that bitterly cold Christmas season. The Hotton Report is a must read for those interested in the combat experience, specifically the Battle of the Bulge, and is a moving tribute to the indomitable spirit of the American combat soldier.

The Hotton Report
By Michael Ozga
This book is a must have for any "true" Bulge enthusiast, especially if you like detailed descriptions of small unit actions during this campaign. It is a very good read and gives good details of actions during the battle from the Allied side and a little less so for the German actions taken during the battle. The author uses a lot of first person accounts to describe the ebb and flow of men locked in a struggle for this small village (i.e., "I fought from this window, foxhole, building", etc.). And, the photos are a great bonus. I was surprised at how much information I gained about this battle from such a little book!! Make the effort to get and read this book as soon as possible.

A REALcombat report
By Gil Nelson
Bob McDonald has captured the essence of this crucial WWII battle that arrested the advance of the Nazi Panzers and recaptured the dominant hill, La Roumiere: The combatants are real U.S. soldiers, some still living. The facts have been painstakingly retrieved from Army reports and the remembrances of the veterans. The writing is crisp, and each word reflects the gripping accounts of combat.
