Sociologically interesting, nostalgic, and still fun
By Librarian
First off they're not politically correct. Few books from the "Rover Boys" era are. But that is one thing that makes them so fascinating to read today. It's actually hard to imagine how far we've come in regard to the treatment and respect of other people until we read century-old books like these and see everyday life being depicted in ways that today seem appalling to us. From a sociological perspective, some of the things being said and done in these books are so foreign to our modern sensibilities that they seem as if they're taking place on another planet. Yet this is how life once really was -- and continued to be even for many years AFTER these novels were written (these subsequent times being something many -- or at least SOME -- of us are old enough to remember). But even as we regret the negatives of the past, we fondly recall its positives. By reading books like these, some of us are reminded of a simpler time. And if they weren't exactly the "good old days" for everyone, they actually were pretty good for some and were PERCEIVED to be good by others (including many who today read these books).
As politically incorrect as they may have been, the Rover Boys didn't swear or do drugs, nor did they smoke pot (or anything else), guzzle alcohol, get tattoos or pierce their bodies, get their girlfriends pregnant, or rob little old ladies. Such things were frowned upon back then. They were considered to be decent, honorable chaps, and never mean-spirited, but they weren't sissies. They were fun-loving, prank-playing, mischievious, red-blooded American lads who had numerous gung-ho adventures involving cars, boats, motorcycles, trains, airplanes, guns and other fun things. And their adventures often took them (and, vicariously, their predominately -- but not exclusively -- male readers) to grand and exciting places. But as the Rover Boys sought to enjoy life in this carefree manner, assorted bullies and other spoilsports always attempted to thwart them. Right, however, ultimately prevailed in the end as mysteries were solved, appropriate justice was rendered, and the miscreants always got their just desserts (though they never seemed to learn their lesson since, unrepentant, they always reappeared).
Stratemeyer's formulaic mode of storytelling does impart a sense of sameness one book to the next, but if taken in moderation (as in don't read them all at one time), these puerile tomes can still be quite enjoyable. But we may rightly wonder: Enjoyable to whom? I suspect most modern youngsters will not be initially attracted to this antiquated series since the language, style, and content are too old-fashioned to likely appeal to them. Besides, today's children have sexy, mind-numbing TV shows and movies to watch and violent computer games to play, so the politically-correct watchdogs need not unduly worry about these "Rover Boys" books somehow further corrupting them. Rather, these stories will probably appeal mostly to older (again presumably male) adults seeking to relive their childhoods (even if they didn't live quite so far back as when these books were written), or by those who have somehow heard about the "Rover Boys" and are curious to learn about them. Or those who, as youngsters, once found some of these books stashed in a dusty corner of the attic, read them, and somehow lost them in the process of growing up and living life. Apart from the nostalgia factor, others may read them more clinically as examples of young adult literature from a bygone era. But presumably a small number of folks -- even SOME inquisitive youngsters, perhaps led to them by a parent -- may actually choose to read and enjoy them for the sheer simple, mindless, wholesome, escapist entertainment they still manage to provide.
In this Megapack, you get a lot of Rover Boys books for a mere buck. But if you still want even more adventures like these, you might wish to also consider the "Tom Swift Megapack." Those books are just as politically incorrect but also just as good as, if not even better than (in my opinion), the "Rover Boys." It should be noted that both of these series preceded the vastly superior "Hardy Boys" and both were actually written by Stratemeyer himself (under the pseudonym Arthur M. Winfield for the "Rover Boys" and as Victor Appleton for "Tom Swift"), whereas "The Hardy Boys" were NOT written by him but by others employed by the Stratemeyer Syndicate using the Franklin W. Dixon pseudonym. This explains why the "Rover Boys" and "Tom Swift" series share a similar stylistic feel, one that is noticeably different from the later and (I think) better-written (original) "Hardy Boys" books.
Rating this is problematic. The books are not great literature by any objective standard and deserve no more than 3-stars, but the quality of the Megapack product itself (attractive formatting, active TOC, quantity of content, low cost, etc.) rates a 5, so overall this set averages 4-stars.

Kids love them, Mom aproves!
By Rachel C.
My kids (daughter, 9, son, 7) have been competing to see who will get through these books the quickest! I have heard much about the Rover boys the last two weeks! I am very careful and conservative about what I let my kids read and have been very pleased with this set thus far.
